CAVALIER, ND (WDAZ-TV) - After a lifetime of playing golf, 83-year-old Elroy Berg of Cavalier played a round last thursday that he'll never forget.
He made his first hole-in-one at the Cavalier Country Club.
Berg made the shot of a lifetime while golfing with friends. He is modest about the accomplishment, claiming it was mostly luck.
Berg still gets in at least three rounds a week with friends at the Cavalier Country Club.
He began swinging his clubs right out of high school in 1947 after World War II. He teed off for the first time at a golf course in Tokyo, Japan while servicing in military.
"It had never been bombed evidently because it was still in good shape," Berg said.
After 65 years of golf, Berg did something he had never done before. It happened at hole number nine, it's a par three, 143 yards. A hole that can be unforgiving.
"You think of it a little bit, there is water on one side and the other side," Berg said.
But Berg teed it up.
"Swing smooth, meet the ball and see what happens," Berg said.
And that would be the only swing Berg would need here.
"Their eyesight isn't as good, so I was the only one who seen it go in. It hit on the green made a couple of bounces and rolled right in," Rodney Keena said.
He might not have watched it go in, but he heard the ball hit the flag pole.
"It could hit it and bounce off, but it didn't. It went right down," Berg said.
"He probably didn't believe me to start with, but he was happy," Keena said.
Berg says he didn't play the hole any differently than he has hundreds of times before. He says he just got a little lucky.
"Closer you get, the better. But to get one like that, was something else," Berg said.
Workers at the Cavalier Country Club say they usually have a hole-in-one about once a year.
