GRAND FORKS (WDAZ-TV) - A $1.8 million upgrade to traffic signals will make driving downtown more efficient.

Workers have already started digging underground to connect the traffic signals.

Ten signals will be connected with fiber optic cable to eventually be run from one location instead of individually.

City officials say it will be more efficient for drivers.

"It really helps with the coordination, down time, if you're at a signal and things aren't working right, people get impatient. But it increases the efficiencies which saves energy and people get happier," principal engineer Mike Yavarow said.

The project is expected to be finished by the middle of October.
