DEVILS LAKE (WDAZ-TV) - A landmark business in Devils Lake has left its home of nearly 50 years.
Krantz's Floral has moved to a new location and the original building is now demolished.
The original home of Krantz's was built during the Kennedy administration, so it held a lot of history. But the owner says the move was made in the name of progress.
It took 15 months for owner Gabriele Nelson to finally decide to sell her shop on Highway 2 in Devils Lake.
"An investor group approached us, thought that the corner was perfect for a new Applebees restaurant. So after long negotiations, we decided to sell that corner," Nelson said.
The building had been gradually torn down this week, but Krantz's is still here, at its new home in Holiday Mall.
"I love it. It's awesome. They have so many colors. So many choices. Fantastic," Krantz's customer Dawn Abrahamson said.
Nelson grew up in the store her parents opened in 1964. The original building held a lifetime of memories, but the move has been more sweet than bitter.
"A little bit bittersweet. A chance at a brand new store over here. Just wonderful. I can honestly say I don't miss the traffic and the noise of the trucks," Nelson said.
And the new location means new customers finally discovering a business that has served Devils Lake for generations.
"Increase in traffic. Absolutely wonderful. Business has been very brisk. Usually it's a slow time of year and it is not slow," Nelson said.
"This is really important. They've been a main staple of the community for a lot of years," Abrahamson said.
The owners say the only big drawback of the move is now some customers don't know where their new location is.
