A small North Dakota community is seeing something of a boom with new businesses opening up and existing ones expanding.

Business people in the town of New Rockford say the local economy is doing great with the help of customers coming from across the state.

Local mechanic Anthony O'Connor branched out to open his own shop, A-O-K Diesel Repair this month. He says local farmers encouraged him to open his own business, one of several new ones in New Rockford.

Established businesses are doing well too. Cash and Carry lumber is more than doubling the size of its lumberyard. Lumberyard manager Bruce Gedrose says New Rockford endured tough times until about a decade ago. That's when area farmers saw their fortunes turn up.

Gedrose: "Farmers are a big part of everybody's business in a small community, and farmers do well, I think most businesses do pretty well too. It has been good the last few years with them."

Both the repair shop and lumber yard have been serving customers from a wider area, even as far away as the state's oil patch. The diesel repair shop has also benefited greatly from the influx of construction equipment to repair roads in the Lake Region.
