An emergency system geared towards giving all people equal access to 9-1-1 continues to make strides.

Next Generation 9-1-1 which will allow people to text their emergencies will give those with disabilities such as hearing impairments equal access to 9-1-1 services.

Representatives say today's 9-1-1 system is largely built around decades-old communication technology, which doesn't tend to everyone in today's society.

The system is based on an i-p platform.

Becky Ault, 911 Director: "It's very rewarding, today's technology is a very fast-paced environment, and to try to stay abreast of that is very tough."

It could be 10, even 20 years before the system is up and running here in Grand Forks.
