New Landfill Under Construction in Devils Lake

The Devils Lake landfill will soon have more space to fill two decades worth of trash.

Construction began two weeks ago on a second landfill at the site.

The landfill was originally opened in 1994 and was designed to hold 20 years worth of waste.

The dump has almost reached its limit so a new one was needed soon.

Devils Lake's landfill is inert which means it doesn't take biodegradable waste.

The project will cost the city $322,000 but the city will get some help from the people who use the landfill the most.

Corey Erickson, Devils Lake Sanitation Supervisor: “We have a closure fee that we add on to the disposal of loads that come out here that will finance the closure and the building of a new one.”

Barring any setbacks, the new landfill should be ready to accept waste by October first.
