As we head into this holiday weekend it's important to keep safety in mind. With many families heading to the area lakes and swimming pools the chance of accidents rise.

At one point this summer drownings were at a record high in Minnesota. Their number has since gone down but Safe Kids Grand Forks has some prevention tips when it comes to having fun near the water.

Carma Hanson, Safe Kids Grand Forks Coordinator: "If children toddle off they tend to drown slightly. It's important that there's always active adult supervision."

Hanson says active supervision means not doing anything distracting while watching children such as talking on a cell phone, reading a book or napping.
