The 2nd annual Altru Walk for Suicide Prevention is this month in Lincoln Park and money raised will help sponsor education on suicide prevention.
Psychiatrists say there are several risk factors when it comes to suicide including untreated depression, family history, feeling trapped or hopeless, increased drug or alcohol use and withdrawal from loved ones. Suicide can be a tough topic to discuss with someone but events like this help some families deal with their loss. Last year nearly 100 people took part in the walk, sharing their stories and raising awareness around the area. The walk also raised nearly $4,000 for suicide prevention education. This year the goal is $10,000.
Mike Dewald, Altru Psychiatric Services Manager: “It provides information to the community about suicide prevention, that suicide can be prevented, but it also gives a place for people to come and walk for someone they've lost from suicide and it means a lot. A lot of them don't want to forget about those folks, they want to remember them, they want to talk about them, they want to talk about suicide and they want to help prevent suicide.”
The 5K walk is Sunday, September 16 at 1 pm. For more information or to register you can log on to http://www.altru.org/suicideprevention.
