A 62-year-old Fargo businessman who once pushed for combining UND and North Dakota State University is running for US Senate.

Bill Kiefer will run as an independent write-in. He's entering the same playing field as democratic candidate Heidi Heitkamp and Republican Representative Rick Berg for the seat vacated by retiring Senator Kent Conrad. Kiefer announced his candidacy Tuesday and if elected he says he'll rely on the public to decide if he should run again.

Kiefer: “The issue is not about Rick Berg or Heidi Heitkamp, the issue is about what can we do to get America headed back in the right direction. North Dakota is in pretty good shape but we've got 49 other states that may not be in as good as shape and what can be done to maybe get this ship righted and headed in the right direction."

Kiefer says if he wins, he'll push to reduce all political campaigns to two months.
