Polk County Commissioners approved a preliminary levy increase for 2013 which would cost homeowners more in property taxes. The county is losing $300,000 in state aid, so the increase may be more than previously expected.

The board approved a three percent increase for 2013 which will amount to about half a million dollars. Commissioners say a three percent increase would be the highest it would go depending on some other issues such as labor agreements. The county is receiving $1.1 million which is a $300,000 decrease from the last budget. This will not only affect county departments but property owners as well.

One of the county departments hit the hardest is the Highway department where they've had to put off getting equipment, changing how they work along with replacement schedules to be more efficient. Commissioners say it's too early to know how much homeowners will have to pay but they should know specifics in the next six weeks. The levy increase will be finalized in December.
