VALLEY CITY, N.D. – Famed North Dakota pilot Bob Odegaard was killed during a practice run for the air show planned for Saturday at the Barnes County Municipal Airport, authorities say.

Sgt. Troy Hischer of the North Dakota Highway Patrol said the crash, which happened about 5:55 p.m., killed Odegaard, a 66-year-old Kindred pilot known for flying vintage P-51 Mustangs.

Hischer said Odegaard was flying in preparation for the air show and reportedly was attempting a barrel roll when he crashed.

"Something went wrong and he crashed," the trooper said.

Authorities aren't yet sure if the crash was caused by mechanical malfunction or pilot error.

The “Wings and Wheels” airshow that was scheduled for Saturday is canceled.
