A Grafton, N.D., man was injured after a train struck his farm truck Wednesday morning near Forest River, N.D., according to a news release from the North Dakota Highway Patrol.
Richard Aguilar, 45, was taken by ambulance to Altru Hospital in Grand Forks. The train’s engineer, Derek Muir, 29, Forest River, was not injured.
Authorities said Aguilar was traveling northbound on a Walsh County gravel road, approaching the railroad crossing shortly before 11 a.m. His vehicle was hit as he attempted to cross the tracks, authorities said. Aguilar turned right to avoid the train, but the train struck the driver’s side of his vehicle.
The front end of the train sustained damage, along with the railroad tracks where the collision occurred. Aguilar’s truck was totaled.
The crossing was marked with warning signs and Muir did blow the train’s whistle before reaching the intersection, the news release said. Aguilar was not wearing a seat belt, authorities said.
The crash remains under investigation by the Highway Patrol.
