This year schools are adapting to some big changes in their lunch rooms with new federally mandated food requirements.
Students are now required to take a half cup of fruits or vegetables with each meal in order for the school to be reimbursed by the federal government for each lunch.
That is not the only change to lunches. Now calories, fat and sodium are limited each week as well as whole grains. The portion of fruits and vegetables is now half the plate with smaller portions of protein and grains. The requirements are set to emphasize a healthier lunch in part to combat obesity. Although some students say they want bigger portions of food, the larger portion of vegetables and fruits are keeping them full. School officials say If students are still hungry, they can always purchase more breads, pasta or protein.
