Smoke-Free Grand Forks?

Should bars and workplaces in Grand Forks be required to be smoke-free?

Should bars and workplaces in Grand Forks be required to be smoke-free? That was the topic of a forum tonight at the Grand Forks County office building. The Grand Forks Tobacco Free Coalition held the forum.

People speaking tonight had a variety of opinions. Some say businesses have the right to chose if smoking should be allowed; others say people have the right to work without risking their health.

Haley Thorson, the President of the Grand Forks Tobacco Free Coalition, says, “We wanted to provide an opportunity for the community members to hear themselves and to hear each other, to see what their attitudes are toward strengthening the law, so that people are aware of other people's ideas.”

Most of the people at the forum tonight were in favor of outlawing smoking in workplaces in Grand Forks. Council member Eliot Glassheim spoke in favor of having a city ordinance banning smoking.
