FARGO – A man having supper Friday with his wife and 2-year-old grandson at Ground Round said he was beaten unconscious after he told another patron who was yelling and swearing loudly that it was a family restaurant and to “try and keep it down a little.”
Police allege 29-year-old Brendan Scott Marjama assaulted the grandfather, then fled to the nearby Hooters restaurant, where he punched a man in the parking lot and tried to steal his wallet.
Marjama, who is from California, was charged Monday with one count of robbery and two counts of aggravated assault in Cass County District Court.
According to court documents:
Police were called at 8:18 p.m. Friday by a witness who said he saw Marjama punch the grandfather and kick him as he lay on the ground outside the Ground Round at 2902 13th Ave. S.
The grandfather told police that after he told Marjama to keep it down, Marjama followed him out of the restaurant trying to provoke a fight. The man’s wife told police that as she was putting the 2-year-old into the car seat, Marjama punched her husband.
The grandfather said he lost consciousness during the assault. A police report notes he had visible bruising, bleeding and swelling to his face.
The grandfather told police he saw his attacker and two other males flee on foot to the west. He said he lost sight of them for a minute but then located them again in the Hooters parking lot as they were assaulting another man.
The second victim told police he had been eating with his wife and had gone out to his car to get a jacket when he heard a male’s voice saying “homeboy” and “do you want a cigarette?” The man said he thought the person was talking to someone else so he didn’t reply.
As the man shut his car door, he was suddenly pinned up against the vehicle and punched in the left side of the face, the police report states.
After the man fell to the ground, Marjama allegedly demanded his wallet. The man said it was inside with his wife, and one of the other people with Marjama allegedly kicked him in the head two or three times.
Marjama was arrested a short time later at Motel 6 and taken to the Cass County Jail. He told police he was never at Hooters and denied any involvement, the report states.
Bail was set Monday at $50,000 cash or bond.
If convicted, Marjama faces up to 10 years in prison for the robbery charge and five years for each of assault charges.
Police also are recommending a misdemeanor assault charge against the 14-year-old boy who allegedly kicked the second victim, Assistant State’s Attorney Renata Selzer said.
Marjama arrived in Fargo from California this summer and had been working construction jobs here, according to a Forum story about day laborers published on Sept. 3.
