Firefighters from around the region are battling at least eight wildfires in northwestern Minnesota this evening. Some residents of Karlstad, including a nursing home, a school and some people who live in the southern part of the town are being evacuated and relocated to Hallock.

Just after after noon today firefighters were called to a large wildfire near Viking, Minnesota. Wind driven flames quickly jumped a highway and threaten many homes. Law enforcement quickly called for evacuations as there was nothing they could do to stop the fire. The National Weather Service says winds in the area were gusting up to 45 miles per hour. At this time the DNR says the winds are too strong to bring in aircraft to fight the fire. The National Weather Service says the winds in the area should switch to the Northwest and diminish this evening which should help conditions there. The Red Cross is in the process of responding to two locations: Karlstad and Hallock.
