Students in the Lake Region get a professional lesson on the right way to write a short story. An author with North Dakota roots came back to her home state to offer a personal workshop for high school students.

Lake Region State College has hosted student writers workshops for four years but this year's workshop offers students a more personal touch. Writer Jennie Shortridge was born in Grand Forks. She now lives in Seattle but came back to North Dakota to help aspiring writers. Local high school students wrote short stories over the summer. Shortridge then read the stories and offered tips. She came to Devils Lake to go over the stories directly with the students. She says she wishes she had this kind of feedback when she was a young writer and wants to help the next generation of authors. The students will take their critiques from Shortridge and revise their stories accordingly. Some of the stories will then actually be published in the college's literary journal.
