Lake Region State College is going green thanks to a new wind turbine the school will build.
The college held the groundbreaking ceremony for 1.6 megawatt wind turbine which will be built three miles north of the campus. Plans for the turbine have been in the works since 2003 but it took years of planning to get the project off the ground. Students in the wind energy program will use it to learn how to repair turbines and it will provide more than enough energy to power the entire Lake Region campus. The school will sell excess energy from the turbine to Otter Tail Power company. The seven million dollar turbine will pay for itself in 15 years.
