Hot spots are still smoking from a field after a grass fire consumed nearly 160 acres near Hawley. About half a dozen agencies battled the blaze this afternoon, barely stopping it before it reached a farmstead.

Firefighters intentionally burned some ground to stop the spread of the fire. It helped them protect homes, power poles and roads around County Highway 32. The blaze started around 1:00 on a piece of US Fish and Wildlife land. It spread so quickly the Clay County Sheriff's Office called in all available crews and volunteers. The Sheriff's Office is not sure what the cause is but say a cigarette may be to blame.

If this was caused by something careless like throwing out a cigarette, the Sheriff says it's a serious offense. The person could owe money to the US Fish & Wildlife plus other landowners affected.
