One Contested Race in Polk County Board Election

Three seats on the Polk County Commission are up for election Nov. 6 but only one district race is contested, according to the Polk County auditor’s office.

Three seats on the Polk County Commission are up for election Nov. 6 but only one district race is contested, according to the Polk County auditor’s office.

In District 3, where incumbent William Montague chose not to run for re-election, the candidates are Dean Adams of rural Crookston and Nick Nicholas of Crookston.

In District 5, incumbent Don Diedrich of rural Warren, Minn., is running unopposed for re-election. The name of Randall Gust also will be on the ballot, but he announced in September that he was withdrawing from the race and would not accept the position if elected.

In District 1, incumbent Craig Buness of Crookston is running unopposed.

Here is information about each of the candidates.

District 1

Craig Buness

Age: 61.

Residence: Crookston.

Occupation: Retired from motor freight industry.

Education: Business degree University of Minnesota-Crookston.

Previous government experience: Crookston City Council, 2005 to 2008; Polk County Commissioner, 2009 to present.

District 3

Dean Adams

Age: 44.

Residence: Rural Crookston Township.

Occupation: Self-employed contractor, owner of rental properties, owner/operator of small hobby farm.

Education: Graduate, Northland Community and Technical College.

Previous government experience: Attended Polk County Commission meetings and met with department heads about county operational policies and procedures; family man and father of four; tackles projects with enthusiasm; committed to serve.

Nick Nicholas

Age: 62.

Residence: Crookston.

Occupation: Owner partner/CFO, DEE Inc.

Education: Business economics, North Dakota State University.

Previous government experience: U.S. Army; U.S. Army Reserves; Vista volunteer; Crookston School Board, 10 years.

District 5

Don Diedrich

Age: 73.

Residence: Rural Warren, Minn. (Brislet Township, Polk County)

Occupation: Retired farmer; commissioned sales representative.

Education: Valedictorian, Northwest School of Agriculture, Crookston

Previous government experience: Polk County Commission, eight years; Polk County Planning and Zoning, 20 years; Brislet Township Board, 20 years; Minnesota Counties Intergovernmental Trust Board; many other boards and organizations.
