North Dakota's Supreme Court has upheld the conviction of a man who hired a hitman to kill his son-in-law in Fargo.

Gene Kirkpatrick is serving life in prison for hiring handyman Michael Nakvinda to kill his son-in-law dentist Philip Gattuso. Authorities said Kirkpatrick didn't want Gattuso raising his granddaughter after Gattuso's wife died. Kirkpatrick said statements he made to police shouldn't have been used against him and says jurors got improper instructions and should have been allowed to consider a less serious charge. The Supreme Court rejected those arguments.
