Just two weeks until election day and the mayoral candidates in East Grand Forks are heating up so bad that it could hurt their campaigns. East Grand Forks Mayor Lynn Stauss fired back at city council members tonight.

He was defending himself for accusations made against him at last week's meeting. Mayoral Candidate Wayne Gregoire said Stauss distributed false and exaggerated information in his campaign flyers. Stauss says he's never had his own council members say such negative things about him but council members Pokrzywinski and Gregoire still say the information Stauss is relaying is false.

In Mayor Stauss' campaign flyer a sentence states in bold type "...To rush into an interconnection arrangement now could result in a 20-percent increase in your property tax..." Council members Pokrzywinski and Gregoire say that isn't right.

Towards the end of the meeting when things really got heated residents expressed their frustrations by leaving the meeting and even exchanging a few words to both Mayor Stauss and councilman Gregoire. Melanie Orlins has more.
