The new chancellor of the North Dakota University System outlined his plan to improve higher education in the state today.

Doctor Hamid Shirvani spoke at the Devils Lake Chamber of Commerce annual meeting. He says admission standards at the state's four-year colleges and research universities will increase. The six-year graduation rate for North Dakota colleges is about 50 percent, which Shirvani says is too low. New standards are designed to create clear benchmarks for students to reach to better prepare for college. Admission standards will remain the same next year but will slowly increase to meet the new standard within a few years.
