The spotlight has shined harshly on the Spirit Lake Nation this year as allegations of child abuse and neglect piled up because of lapses in the tribe's social services program. For domestic violence awareness month the tribe is trying to prevent situations like that from happening again.

Tribal organizations originally planned a one-day conference on domestic violence but decided the extend it to a two-day event. The Spirit Lake Tribal Court and Victims Assistance program sponsored the "Awareness and Healing Conference". Presenters today spoke about the causes of domestic violence and what people can do to help stop it. Tomorrow's topic is the effect violence has on children and how tribal programs can help. Organizers say the negative attention has brought tribal members and groups closer together, which is the first step in dealing with a common problem. Tribal organizations are already working closer together to help end violence, meeting regularly to find out how they can assist each other with domestic violence cases.
