Tuberculosis testing on the first group of students and staff at Phoenix Elementary was reviewed today.
Of the 52 tests read, one, which was a staff member, came back abnormal. But, that doesn't mean the individual has TB, it just means they've been exposed. The individual was referred to their healthcare provider for further testing. If the staff member's test is deemed positive for the disease the Public Health Department will then test a third group at Phoenix Elementary for TB. Public Health Director Don Shields says "This is a disease that will be in the community for quite some time. It's also one that's difficult to catch, you have to have prolonged contact with an individual in a very close environment that's coughing. Children normally don't pass this on because they're not good transmitters."
Testing on group two was done on Wednesday, and those results will be reviewed Friday.
