A new program put in place by the North Dakota Attorney General's office to cut down on prescription drug abuse has collected more than 50 pounds of drugs just in Grand Forks since December.

A new program put in place by the North Dakota Attorney General's office to cut down on prescription drug abuse has collected more than 50 pounds of drugs just in Grand Forks since December.

There is a container to collect the drugs in the lobby of the police department.

The police department says they hope the new program will lower the number of people abusing prescription drugs because they won't be available to others trying to get the unused prescriptions.

The North Dakota Bureau of Criminal Investigation collects the drugs and have taken in 52 pounds in about two months.

Lt. Roger Pohlman / Grand Forks Police Department: "One thing that we've noticed in law enforcement is an increase in prescription drug abuse, and its just great to get these drugs off the streets and disposed of properly where they aren't turning up being sold or abused on the streets."

The BCI destroys the drugs by burning them.
