Two North Dakota national guard soldiers were killed and a third injured in action yesterday while on duty in Afghanistan. One of the soldiers killed was from Devils Lake.

They were part of the 818th Engineer Company. 41-year-old Sergeant First Class Darren Linde of Devils Lake and 20-year-old Specialist Tyler Orgaard of Bismarck, were killed in action. The soldiers were conducting operations when their vehicle struck an IED. Including Linde and Orgaard, 14 North Dakota Guardsmen have died in action in Iraq and Afghanistan. 23-year-old specialist Ian Placek also of Bismarck was wounded in the attack and is listed in stable condition in Germany.

Linde leaves behind a wife and four children. He lived in Devils Lake, but was originally from Sidney, Montana about 45 miles southwest of Williston. Linde also deployed to Iraq with the N.D. National Guard's 164th Engineer Battalion from August 2007 to April 2008. The North Dakota National Guard will announce funeral arrangements as soon as available.
