Blue Ribbon Housing Commission members mulled over different solutions to solve the city's housing crunch this afternoon.
It was one of the final meetings before the commission presents its official recommendation to the Mayor's office. Commission members recognize the immediate problem in town is the lack of lots to build on in terms of new home construction.
Superintendent of schools and commission member Dr. Larry Nybladh says it floors him to believe a community the size of Grand Forks has no lots available for building next spring. Nybladh proposed an idea called the "North Dakota Special Assessment Anticipation Fund". The idea is for the city to work with state legislatures as well as the bank of North Dakota in terms of covering costs to acquire more land. Nybladh says there needs to be some ability to mitigate the risk and help the city finance that infrastructure.
