No Vote on Sioux Nickname Next Year

There will not be a statewide vote on the Fighting Sioux nickname next year.

Supporters of UND's now retired nickname did not submit petitions to force another statewide vote by Wednesday's deadline. The Spirit Lake Sioux Tribe's pro-nickname Committee for Understanding and Respect had one year from the time its petitions were approved by the secretary of state's office to turn the petition. The initiated measure was intended to bring back the nickname by making it part of the state's constitution. Voters rejected a measure in last June's primary that would have also have brought back the nickname and logo.
