An oil well blowout is spewing oil onto land surrounding the well site near New Town, North Dakota.

An oil well blowout is spewing oil onto land surrounding the well site near New Town, North Dakota.

The blowout happened Wednesday night at a well operated by Slawson Exploration just a half mile north of Lake Sakakawea, a reservoir on the Missouri River. Slawson District Superintendent Kyle Waliezer says no one was injured when the well failed between six and seven on Wednesday night. He says the company has put up three barriers between the site and the lake to keep liquid oil from reaching the Missouri River. He says the accident happened as the company was working on the rig that was already producing oil. North Dakota currently has 182 rigs drilling for oil and is nation's second leading state for oil production.
