Two New TB Cases Confirmed, Bringing Total to 15

An additional two cases of tuberculosis have been confirmed in Grand Forks. This makes a total of 15 active cases identified in the area since October.

An additional two cases of tuberculosis have been confirmed in Grand Forks. This makes a total of 15 active cases identified in the area since October.

Health officials say the new cases were expected because TB is spread in the air just by coughing or sneezing. The new cases were identified by investigating people in close contact with those already diagnosed. The health department will continue testing anyone who may have prolonged exposure with active cases. Five of the previously identified cases are children. Both new cases are adults.

Debbie Swanson, Grand Forks Health Department: "We have not identified any additional cases in schools, and all of the cases that we did identify among children in our community they were known contacts of active cases. At this point in time we don't have any evidence that the disease has spread in a school setting."

While it is possible more cases may still pop up, swanson says there's not a great risk to the general public.
