A 15-year-old girl from Sheyenne, North Dakota is preparing to take on the top sled dog racers in her age group at the Junior Iditarod race in February.

Melinda Tjelta is one of ten racers invited to Willow, Alaska to compete among others between the ages of 14 and 17. She's one of only two competitors from the lower 48 states. Melinda has been training for this race since spring, months before she was even formally invited to run. That commitment has meant a lot of sacrifice, and a lot of help from her family.

Melinda has many local sponsors in the Devils Lake and New Rockford area. There will also be a fish fry fundraiser to help pay for the Alaska trip on January 4th at the New Rockford Golf Course.
