Officials Say Tanker Mission Good For Civilian Jobs, Economy as Well as Military

As we first reported last night, the Grand Forks Air Force Base is a finalist to receive a new aerial refueling tanker mission. That new mission is important outside the confines of the base. It would have a huge impact on the local economy.

As we first reported last night, the Grand Forks Air Force Base is a finalist to receive a new aerial refueling tanker mission. That new mission is important outside the confines of the base. It would have a huge impact on the local economy.

Right now the base employees around 2,000 military personnel but with this new tanker mission the number of jobs could double, and not just for military members. With only the current UAS mission there have been nearly 200 civilians working in the UAS industry. Now the base is one of four finalists to become the main operating base for the Air Force's new tanker mission which would make it a dual-mission base.

Officials say as a community we need to continue our support and stand with those trying to keep the base because there could be billions of dollars in defense cuts over the next 10 years.
