The severe flu season has caused Mercy Hospital in Devils Lake to restrict visitation access to patients. It's part of an effort to keep the flu from spreading further than it has already this year.

There have already been as many reported flu cases this season than the last two years combined in Ramsey County, and we haven't even reached the peak of flu season. That means restrictions at Mercy Hospital. Only immediate family members are allowed to visit patients and the hospital asks that people coming to the emergency room only bring one other person with them. Any visitors to the hospital showing flu-like symptoms may be asked to wear a surgical mask. This is the first time in recent memory that visitor access has been restricted in the hospital. Hospital president Jim Marshall says it's a delicate balancing act between safety and access for family.
