Ag Officials Discuss Tiling at Water Conference

Some local farmers are using drainage systems to keep their fields dry during times of flooding. Although there is some controversy about where that water goes, there are new ways to control the drainage and produce higher yields.

Some local farmers are using drainage systems to keep their fields dry during times of flooding. Although there is some controversy about where that water goes, there are new ways to control the drainage and produce higher yields.

The cost for drain tile can be between $600 to a little over $1,000 per acre but some farmers say the cost is worth it.

Drainage tile is a plastic tube, four to six inches with slots that is laid in the fields, drawing the water to it. Farmers say in the past ten years the problem has been too much rain and tiling has proved to get rid of excess moisture, it can also be used during times of drought to keep moisture in place. Ag. Officials say tiling will be a key place they will target working with producers and landowners to put up gated and controlled structures so it can release water and shut it off during critical times. Through the farm bill, there are payment plans in place for farmers to utilize.
