A bipartisan letter today gained 53 signatures in the U.S. Senate, urging President Barack Obama to approve the Keystone XL pipeline.

Those signatures reflect a majority in the senate. Democratic senator Heidi Heitkamp and republican John Hoeven are among those in favor of the project along with Montana's democratic senator Max Baucus. Just yesterday, Nebraska Governor Dave Heineman approved an alternative route for the pipeline that avoids the environmentally sensitive sand hills. The senators backing the project ask the president to choose jobs, economic development and American energy security and to approve the pipeline.
