North Dakota lawmakers are considering a bill that could more than double taxes on a pack of cigarettes.
Right now, people buying a pack of smokes pay 44 cents in taxes but a proposed bill wants to bump that up to a dollar. The potential increase is still dismal in comparison to the $4.35 in taxes people in New York pay. The tax hike would add anywhere from $15 to $20 million into the state's general fund, but its main goal is to get people to quit smoking.
