Students in the Trio Program received some awards today with the help of Congressman Earl Pomeroy.

The Trio program is designed to give students who might not otherwise have the means to attend college the opportunity to.

Participants were recognized for their academic achievements and advocacy of the program.

Trio targets junior high and high school students whose families have little college backgrounds and gives them the tools and financial help to enroll in college.

There are more than 2500 members state-wide and they say the program opened new doors to them.

"It really helped me see my potential and see I can do it they also helped me with financial aid so basically without it I wouldn't be here right now."

Many of the kids are or potentially could be first generation college students.
