Nearly 100 horses have been found dead north of New Salem, North Dakota. The Morton County Sheriff's Office has taken 119 horses into custody after finding 96 dead horses at a ranch northwest of New Salem.

The 25 in the worst condition are being removed today and taken to Triple H Miniature Horse Rescue south of Mandan. Authorities have not identified the owner of the horses. Sheriff Dave Shipman says the county is working with local ranchers and the family of the owner to make sure there is adequate food and water for the rest of the horses being cared for on scene.

Bruce Strinden, Morton County Commissioner, "Someone has to take care of these animals. You have a case where he has a soft spot for the animals, did not want to see them sent to the slaughterhouse and it just got to be too much for one person." Strinden says he was told the animals likely died over a period of several months. The state's attorney's office will be considering whether or not to file charges in the case. Sheriff Shipman says the man is retired, knows there is a problem and is cooperating with authorities.
