The bitter cold is keeping young students inside during recess these days. Grand Forks principals are being given the discretion to decide when it's too cold for kids to be outdoors.
Teachers say outdoor recess is an important period because it gives students an opportunity to get some exercise and fresh air, but the bitter cold temperatures are trumping those benefits and keeping the school playgrounds deserted. The principal at Kelly Elementary says when it gets below zero or the wind chill is below zero, kids are not allowed outside for recess. If there is an open gym students can spend recess time there, but often it's spent in the classroom. School officials says some students do not come with enough winter clothing to spend recess outside during these bitter temps.
