FARGO, N.D. (AP) - The Army Corps of Engineers plans an early

drawdown of Lake Traverse because of excessive moisture in the Red

River Valley.

The drawdown is to start Tuesday. The drawdown on Orwell Lake

will begin at the normal time of March 1.

The corps and officials in the Red River basin are gearing up

for anticipated spring flooding. The drawdowns provide more storage

space for spring runoff.

The corps also is working on a diversion channel to provide

long-term flood protection for Fargo and neighboring Moorhead,

Minn. A diversion worries some residents downstream on the

north-flowing river.

Minnesota state Rep. Kent Eken, DFL-Twin Valley, says he will

offer an amendment to a public works funding bill that would

prohibit spending state money on the diversion if the corps does

not protect downstream communities.
