Drayton Baby Undergoes Heart Surgery at Four Days Old

Against all odds, a Drayton baby is doing well after being diagnosed with a rare heart condition. The 4-month-old baby has already had one heart surgery and has two more to go by the time he's two years old.

Nicholas Passa was born with several different heart defects including Dextrocardia and Pulmonary Atresia and at four days old he had already had his first open heart surgery.

Nicholas' conditions mean that his heart points toward the right side of the chest instead of the left, and instead of four chambers and four valves Nicholas only has three chambers and two valves.

Parents Chris and Andrea were told at a routine 20-week ultrasound at Altru about the defects and several tests followed. Doctors say the most common birth defects are heart defects, but Nicholas' conditions are rare with only one baby in over 10,000 being born with Pulmonary Atresia.

Nicholas will most likely require at least two more surgeries to correct the problems with his heart. A silent auction and bake sale will be held for Nicholas this Sunday, February 10th from 5:00-7:00 p.m. at the Drayton School.
