WDAZ to Televise Minnesota Section 8A Boys Hockey Championship Game

The championship game will be televised live for the first time at 7:00 P.M., Thursday, Feb. 28, from the East Grand Forks Civic Center.

(GRAND FORKS, ND) -- WDAZ-TV and Forum Communications are proud to announce that, for the first time ever, the Minnesota Section 8A boys hockey championship game will be televised live on WDAZ-TV, Channel 8.

The telecast will air at 7:00 P.M., Thursday, Feb. 28, live from the East Grand Forks Civic Center.

"WDAZ is thrilled and honored to be the first station to televise the event," said WDAZ Station Manager Rob Horken. "We want to thank Section 8 secretary Jim Weinzierl and the Minnesota State High School League for their cooperation in making this telecast possible."

"The Section 8A championship game is unquestionably one of the biggest high school events in our viewing area," said WDAZ Sports Director Pat Sweeney, who will call the play-by-play of the game. "We are excited to be a part of history, and look forward to the championship telecast."

WDAZ has a long history of live sports telecasts, having produced and aired University of North Dakota games and coaches' shows, as well as Minnesota and North Dakota high school events over the course of five decades.

The tournament begins Feb. 19 with first-round games, followed by quarterfinal games at home sites on Feb. 21. The tournament moves to the East Grand Forks Civic Center for semifinal games on Feb. 23, followed by the title game on Feb. 28.

Thief River Falls is the defending section champion, defeating East Grand Forks 4-1 in last year's section final.
