Fifty dollar weddings aren't just happening in Las Vegas. People had the chance to tie the knot for that price in Grand Forks today. People who got married at the spiritual center and store The Twelve Houses in downtown Grand Forks celebrated Valentine's Day in the ultimate way-by saying "I Do." Flowers and candy may be a more traditional way to celebrate Valentine's Day, but people had the chance to take their relationship to the next level for a very low price. Reverend Robert Howard made it possible for couples to marry for just fifty dollars.
Rev. Robert Howard/Marrying Couples Today: "[To] give people a chance to make the official day of love their anniversary date."
This will also make it easier to remember. Howard says he was hoping to marry three or four couples today. He married one, and a second couple had to postpone theirs until next Sunday. He says people were interested, but perhaps found out about the offer too late.
Rev. Robert Howard: "It's possible that by the time people got the word about it they just didn't have time to do the proposing, get the license, and get everything taken care of."
Howard says before the weddings, both the bride and groom need to sign the marriage license. Two witnesses need to be present during the ceremony. He says the simple ceremonies are great for people who are getting re-married, who aren't religious, or who don't want something extravagant.
Rev. Robert Howard: "A lot of people don't want the expensive weddings. They want to do it simply, they want to make it legal, but they don't want to spend a fortune."
Howard says he's interested in offering fifty dollar weddings again next Valentine's Day. He does weddings for sixty-five dollars year-round at The Twelve Houses.
