ND Congressman Talks Guns in 1st Public Forum

North Dakota freshman Rep. Kevin Cramer says he picked guns as the topic for his first public forum because he wanted a place where the discussion would remain civil.

FARGO — North Dakota freshman Rep. Kevin Cramer says he picked guns as the topic for his first public forum because he wanted a place where the discussion would remain civil.

The Republican congressman got what he wanted for the most part Friday, when a panel of advocates and about a dozen citizens in the Fargo audience gave their opinions on guns and violence.

Cramer says fellow lawmakers warned him about inviting a fight he didn't need, but he was happy with the way participants in the event were able to "calm it down" and stick to the issues.

The congressman says he believes some sort of background checks on gun buyers might have merit, but he doesn't see a "great legislative agenda that solves this problem, certainly not the cultural problems."
