Spirit Lake officials will meet with representatives from North Dakota's senators Wednesday to offer an update on the progress of the tribe's social services program. Officials from the BIA are expected to join Spirit Lake leaders to meet with reps from Senators John Hoeven and Heidi Heitkamp.
The BIA took over the tribe's child protection program last October after months of controversy over the safety of children in the program. The meeting is open to the public. Child welfare advocates who have criticized the tribe say they're hoping the BIA will show some progress, but they're not hopeful. The meeting is scheduled for Wednesday morning at 10:00 a.m. at the Spirit Lake Casino. The public is invited to attend.
