Locked-Out Workers Pleased with New Ruling

Many American Crystal Sugar workers in North Dakota are thrilled with a state Supreme Court ruling in their favor. More than 400 locked-out workers in the state will collect up to $4 million in benefits.

Many American Crystal Sugar workers in North Dakota are thrilled with a state Supreme Court ruling in their favor. More than 400 locked-out workers in the state will collect up to $4 million in benefits.

After nearly two years without benefits some have lost houses, had to sell cars or boats to make ends meet. This ruling brought tears to the eyes of some of the workers who have been struggling to find other jobs. After a district judge previously ruled the former employees were not eligible for jobless benefits, many thought they may never get the benefits other States like Minnesota received. More than 230 workers appealed the decision to the Supreme Court, which ruled in their favor. Locked-out workers say this is long overdue and they still hope the company takes notice so they can get back to the negotiating table. Many are hoping these benefits help people who have been struggling to get back on their feet.

Local Union Representative John Riskey says they have laid out clarifications on a return to work, and they're waiting for the company to get back to them.
