There was a heated exchange today between Spirit Lake tribal and federal officials over a perceived lack of change in the tribe's social services program addressing child abuse and neglect.

Officials organized a public forum to share what has happened since the BIA took over tribal child protection, and to open a discussion with tribal members. The meeting was a tense back-and-forth between officials who say progress is being made and tribal members who say things are still just as bad.

Tribal members also say BIA police have failed on numerous occasions to respond to calls about violent activities or children in need.
