The search continues for a Twin Cities man who disappeared while body surfing off the coast of Mexico last Tuesday. Mark Stoneberg and his wife Nancy were vacationing at their timeshare when suddenly a riptide pulled Mark under the water. Nancy, whose maiden name is Ruddy, is originally from Grand Forks.

Deb Marynik says this week has been filled with shock and despair for her family. What's ironic is that Mark, a former bodybuilder, had been physically preparing for this trip for months. She says he was looking

forward to learning how to surf.

Around 5 p.m. on Tuesday, Mark Stoneberg was learning to body surf on the beaches of Sayulita, Mexico. His wife Nancy was watching from the shore when she noticed he was out too far.

Deb Marynik, family member, "He went down, came back up, and went down again and wasn't seen."

Nancy rushed to a nearby policeman and lifeguard, but Marynik says they refused to help.

Deb, "They said he had been too far out, there's nothing they can do, in a few days the body will wash up on shore and then we'll recover the body.

Nancy didn't accept that answer.

Deb, "She ran for a mile to find a fisherman with a boat to get him to go out and look."

But they didn't find anything.

Deb, "The next morning the authorities did search for a few hours, and stopped, told her again that he was believed to have been drowned and lost at sea.

Nancy refuses to give up. The U.S. embassy is now involved, and the search continues with divers and helicopters.

Deb, "His children are hopeful because of his strength, but primarily Nancy is the one that is saying my husband was strong enough to survive a riptide."

Marynik isn't so sure.

Deb, "I believe the chances are very very slim and I'm expecting to go to a funeral."

Nancy vows to stay in Mexico until a body is found, or all resources have been exhausted.
