Cathi Gunderson is in her early 60's and decided hiking on the Pacific Crest Trail was something she wanted to do. Gunderson has hiked before, but the longest journey she has been on was about 200 miles. The five-month hike will bring her through California, Oregon and Washington. Gunderson has food packed up which will be shipped to specific spots along the trail. The hiker hits the gym to train for the hike and is excited to get started.
Gunderson, "I've always loved to hike and when I found out about long distance trails I thought well that's the ultimate I have to do those. So I am starting with the Pacific Crest Trail and I may end up doing other ones, it depends how this one goes."
Around 600 permits are issued to hikers for the trail each year. Less than half of those people actually finish the whole hike. Other long-distance trails she could try out in the future include the Appalachian Trail and the Continental Divide Trail.
